Whether I’m considering science, poetry, carpentry, or music, nothing opens the door to enlightenment wider than the (spoken or unspoken) phrase “I’m curious…” If there’s a secret sauce to Spotlight On, I believe that it’s Lawrence Puryear’s curiosity. And he always approaches his guests with the respect of having done his homework. He’s researched careers and discographies, so we know that his questions come from a place of intellectual truth. “I understand some of what you’re doing, but I want to know more.”
My own musical interest and taste tends to be jazz-centric, but I want to listen to more than that. That’s how we grow, both as musicians and audiences. Yet we live in a world where there are so many choices that it’s easy to be frozen in place, rather than try to navigate the vast universe. I’ve grown to trust the new listening experiences that Spotlight On presents to me. I may not love everything, but that’s okay. I’ve never wasted my time by listening. Thank you.
